    • How is this firewall interpreted?
    • Same course abbreviation can’t count towards the major.

    • Will be brought back in December for a vote.

Standing Rules Article II

  • Hold off on changing language legislating two vice chairs until determine if also need subcommittee structure change.

    Previous Meeting Minutes

    • Approved the minutes from the April 25, 2017 meeting.

    Charges for SCCA 2017-2018

    • BA requirement
      • New general education has active learning so reviewing BA separate is redundant so need for BA to review general education proposals now.
      • BA would be responsible for “other cultures” courses and courses that want just a BA and no general education attributes
    • Revise Standing Rules Article II, Section 6-c to create two Vice Chairs for the Senate Committee on Curricular Affairs
    • Consult with Undergraduate Education to define poor academic standing

    Suffixes

    • Linked courses with have the Z suffix
    • Inter-domain courses will have an N suffix
    • Discussion on whether or not to have more than one suffix on linked and inter-domain courses if they are also writing, first-year seminar or honors

    Subcommittees

    • Documents have been posted in Box for the subcommittees to look at and see what they are to be reviewing on the proposals.

    Program Closures

    Wellness and Safety of First Year Students – Patricia Koch

    • Concerns that curriculum is the answer to a societal issue.
    • Concerns that they will be restricting courses that students can take.
    • Think about moving courses that pertain to health and wellness towards the front of the program of study instead of at the end as advisers recommend.
    • More supportive of an annual completion module. Make students do a module before registering for classes.

    Engaged Scholarship – Nicholas Rowland

    • Description needs to be more straight-forward for students.
    • Like alignment with Land Grant Mission but not sure students know what that means.

    Minors

    • Committee voted to approve recommended changes.

    General Education Update

    • SEED grant proposal submission is closed.
    • Received 134 proposals.
    • Proposals largely favored inter-domain courses.
    • Hope to have list of awardees by end of month.

    LionPATH

    • No updates on LionPATH.

    Curriculum.psu.edu Updates on Usage

    • Is there a way to filter by college?
    • Being able to see the voting tally is nice.
    • Really like curriculum.psu.edu and would like to move to using it soon.

    LionPATH

    • Suggest we change curriculum guidelines regarding Writing Across the Curriculum in unit or college.
    • Possibly remove this statement of the requirement – committee members were not in favor of this.
    • Suggestion to offer a resolution to Senate that we don’t support this and LionPATH should follow curriculum guidelines.
    • Resolve to explore options in coding via LionPATH before moving forward with a resolution.

    Minors

    • Data coming to look at how many students earn minors and are under 126 credits and to identify how many and which majors are affected.
    • Should have specific information by the middle of February.

    General Education Update

      • Webinar being held Thursday, January 26 at 2:00 p.m.M

    FYE/FYS Committee

        • Looking at requiring another component for a course for first year students.
        • Should see an informational report in March

        • Identify where actual problems are with colleges.
        • Will discuss more on this topic at a later time.

     Certificates

        • Whose job should it be to monitor the certificates?
        • Look into forming another standing subcommittee.

     Updates and Discussion on General Education Implementation

        • A temporary website is up with material for general education for use by faculty and staff. Website is gened.psu.edu.
        • Working on getting recertification information up as well.
        • Questions can be e-mailed to gened@psu.edu.
        • Maggie Slattery is in process of meeting with Associate Deans.

    LionPATH, Registrar, and Timeline

        • Approval dates for courses don’t always match up with the roll dates so dates may need to be changed to match the roll dates.

        • Overview of the subcommittee functionality in curriculum.psu.edu.
        • Please go in and look around and see how it works and submit any problems or issues to Cortney Smith.

    Curriculum.psu.edu Presentation

        • Overview of what the new general education criteria will look like when submitting proposals through curriculum.psu.edu.
        • New general education proposals can start to be submitted on November 1, 2016.

    Presentation by Office of Institutional Planning and Assessment

        • Overview of planning and assessment office and what they are working on and what they have coming up in the future.

    Updates and Discussion on General Education Implementation

        • Assessment vs. Recertification –tried to align the questions both required, but that confused things.
        • Assessment needs to happen now. Currently, the General Education assessment is running a pilot with a small number of faculty in GH and GQ.
        • Recertification needs to happen over the next three years and will require conversations with the disciplinary community.
        • Goals- determining the defining characteristics of a course, sharing best practices and strengthening the disciplinary community.
        • Hot topic – requiring a syllabus, what does SCCA want to see on a syllabus and how will it be reviewed. Suggested language from Judy Ozment – “durable elements of academic/curricular components”  or from someone else maybe “core curricular elements”

    Update on US/IL

        • Recommendation #5 was sent out to the US/IL subcommittee but no response was received.
        • Curricular Affairs feels these items should be reviewed and handled with the US/IL subcommittee and an additional subcommittee does not need to be established.

        • Review US/IL requirements – either put together an informational or legislative report.

        • Approved the minutes from the April 19, 2016 meeting

    LionPATH

        • Bulletin is no longer updating course information.
        • Can a link be inserted in the Bulletin to direct users to LionPATH?
        • Course suffixes were taken away.
        • No new courses will be put through and accepted with a new suffix.
        • Move January meeting date up one week to meet LionPATH publication dates – was decided to keep meeting date as is and just complete review spreadsheet earlier 

    General Education Implementation

        • Curriculum.psu.edu is not ready to handle General Education proposals yet.
        • Do not start proposals in curriculum.psu.edu until General Education criteria are in place or they will have to be started over again
        • Integrative Studies is not ready to be put in curriculum.psu.edu yet.
        • Integrative Studies courses will need to go through General Education review first and then to the Integrative Studies Subcommittee for review. 

    New Members Informational Report

        • Committee was charged with putting together an Informational Report of Curricular Affairs processes and duties for new members
        • Report was reviewed and will have some edits completed then will be sent out for vote to move it forward.

    Information Report on Expediting Curricular Process

        • Prerequisite changes
        • Dealing with General Education work load
        • Targeting most enrolled courses 

    Discussion on US/IL Courses

        • US/IL courses are being pulled into General Education and they are not part of General Education.
        • Possibly put together an Informational Report to say how a US/IL subcommittee is already in place to review proposals and how everything will be implemented. 

    Five-Year Drops

        • Need members to review and look at exceptions to the five-year drops
        • Robert Shannon and Colleen Connolly-Ahern volunteered to look at the exceptions.
