Joint Senate Committee on Workload Expectations

Charge

Penn State is a complex, land-grant, public research institution with multiple campuses, missions, and disciplines. Faculty play a critical role Penn State’s ability to deliver its mission, via the teaching of undergraduate, graduate, professional, continuing, and extension education offered through both resident instruction and distance learning, engagement in research and creative accomplishments, and participation in educational and public service. Faculty workload is reflective of these efforts and is to be distributed equitably, and with transparency and consistency, while allowing flexibility.

This committee is charged with developing an approach to establish faculty workload expectations and associated guidance for the university, reflective of the wide range of faculty duties (e.g., basic and applied research, scholarship, creative activities, teaching, advising, extension programming, clinical patient practice, librarianship, service, and administrative duties), faculty types (tenure-line & non-tenure-line; teaching, research & clinical), discipline, and mission of the college and campus.
